I was driving home tonight, listening to the sober podcast as always, and the guy that was being interviewed started telling his story.
The funny part is that I was basically hearing my own story. If you've been around the recovery world for any amount of time, and it hasn't happened yet, I promise you that at some point, you will hear someone tell your story also.
This guy didn't have the same background as me, didn't do the same type of work, was from a completely different part of the country, but he was telling my story. He was talking about the way he drank, what happened when he drank, and the consequences that he faced.
And then he started talking about the relationships that he ruined and how he was able to repair those relationships once he got sober. Even some of the specific details, about being able to help somebody, who had always been there to help him in the past, hit home with me.
As I was listening to his story, it brought me back in my mind, and also in my heart. Feeling the pain and the emotion that I felt during those times, whether they were good or bad.
In my opinion, that's the point of this whole thing. People sharing with people about the things that they've been through, with just the smallest hope that one sliver of information may help somebody.
Don't be afraid to tell your story. I promise that it will help you to heal, and you may get the opportunity to help somebody else heal.
